Byline Terms of Service

Effective Date: July 23, 2026

Byline by Revision History ("Byline") is a school-managed Chrome browser extension, provided by TabWrite, LLC, a Delaware limited liability company operating as Revision History ("TabWrite", "we", "us" or "our"), that provides schools and teachers with visibility into their students' writing process and use of AI as well as teacher-managed and controlled guardrailed AI writing coaching in Google Docs.

These Byline Terms of Service (these "Byline Terms") govern access to and use of Byline. They supplement the Revision History Terms of Service, which apply to Byline except where these Byline Terms or a School Agreement (defined below) provide otherwise.

Byline Is Licensed Exclusively Through Schools

Byline is not available for individual purchase or download by students, parents or other consumers. Byline is licensed only to schools, school districts and other educational institutions (each a "School") under a signed subscription services agreement, order form and Student Data Privacy Agreement ("DPA") (collectively, the "School Agreement"). Each School's School Agreement governs TabWrite's handling of student data for that School and controls over these Byline Terms in the event of a conflict. To request a DPA, contact info@revisionhistory.com.

Access and Deployment

Byline is deployed by the School to managed student accounts, domains, organizational units, classrooms or other scopes that the School enables. Students access Byline using their existing School-managed Google account credentials; TabWrite does not independently manage student authentication or registration. The School controls whether and where Byline is active, and teachers may enable or disable AI coaching on a per-assignment basis. Your use of Byline is subject to your School's policies, including its acceptable use and academic integrity policies.

AI Writing Coaching

When enabled by the School and the teacher, Byline provides AI-generated writing coaching through a sidebar in Google Docs. Coaching is delivered through pre-set, pedagogy-aligned prompt types and is designed to guide revision and encourage critical thinking rather than generate content on the student's behalf. AI coaching may be subject to usage guardrails, such as unlocking feedback only after a set number of typed words.

AI output disclaimer. AI-generated coaching responses are produced by automated systems and may be inaccurate, incomplete or otherwise imperfect. Coaching responses are informational suggestions only. They are not a substitute for teacher instruction, feedback or grading, and students remain responsible for their own work.

Important Notice About Monitoring and Teacher Visibility

Byline is a School-managed educational tool. While Byline is active, it collects and processes student data, including:

  • student writing content in the Google Doc at the time of a coaching request, used to generate a relevant coaching response;
  • AI prompt interactions and any text the student has selected at the time of a coaching request;
  • browsing metadata, meaning websites visited and browser extensions active while Byline is active; and
  • writing session data, such as word counts, document activity timing and session metadata.

Teachers, administrators and other authorized School personnel may view students' writing process, AI interactions, browsing metadata and related activity through the Revision History dashboard and teacher extension. If the School or teacher turns off AI coaching for an assignment, browsing and extension activity logging remains active. Students and parents should understand that activity while Byline is active is visible to the School and should not be considered private from the School.

Student Data and Privacy

TabWrite processes student data collected through Byline on behalf of the School and as directed by the School under the applicable School Agreement, including the DPA. The Byline section of our Privacy Policy describes the categories of data Byline collects and how they are used, including transmission of student writing content to our AI subprocessor solely to generate coaching responses. TabWrite does not sell student data, does not use student data for targeted advertising and does not use student data to train or improve general-purpose AI models.

Parents, guardians and eligible students should direct requests to access, correct or delete student data to the School, which controls student data under the School Agreement. TabWrite will support the School in responding to those requests.

Acceptable Use

You will not (and will not attempt to):

  • circumvent or interfere with Byline's guardrails, usage limits, logging or monitoring features;
  • use Byline's AI features for any purpose other than the writing coaching features made available by your School;
  • submit content through Byline that is unlawful, harmful or abusive or that violates School policy;
  • copy, modify, distribute, reverse engineer or create derivative works of Byline; or
  • access or use Byline other than through a School-managed deployment.

Intellectual Property

Students (or the School, as determined by School policy and applicable law) retain all rights in student writing. TabWrite claims no ownership of student writing or other student-generated content. TabWrite and its licensors own all right, title and interest in and to Byline, including all related software, algorithms, models and documentation. Subject to the applicable School Agreement and these Byline Terms, TabWrite grants the authorized users of a subscribing School a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable right to use Byline during the School's subscription term.

Disclaimers; Limitation of Liability

BYLINE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE." TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, TABWRITE DISCLAIMS ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. As between TabWrite and a School, warranties, indemnities and limitations of liability are governed by the School Agreement. For all other users, to the fullest extent permitted by law, TabWrite will not be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential or punitive damages, and TabWrite's total aggregate liability arising out of or relating to Byline will not exceed $100.

Suspension; Termination

Access to Byline ends when the School's subscription ends or when the School removes a student or unit from its deployment. TabWrite may suspend access to protect the security or integrity of Byline or in the event of a violation of these Byline Terms, subject to the applicable School Agreement. Handling of student data upon termination, including deletion and return, is governed by the DPA.

Changes to These Byline Terms

We may modify these Byline Terms from time to time. If a revision is material, we will provide at least 30 days' notice to subscribing Schools before the new terms take effect and will post notice on our website. Material changes will not reduce the protections for student data set forth in a School's signed DPA.
